The heurtley.com e-mail server is a computer named
flounder.jimking.net. Flounder is located in New Orleans, Louisiana
and hosts the www.heurtley.com web site in addition to doing e-mail.
Usernames
You need to know your heurtley.com e-mail username to access your e-mail.
Usernames usually are different than
the name part of your e-mail address. Instead they are usually,
but not always, your first name followed by the first letter of your
last name. For example, if Richard Heurtley's e-mail address is
richard@heurtley.com then his username is probably richardh.
There are two kinds of heurtley.com e-mail accounts:
Forwarding e-mail accounts
Forwarding e-mail accounts forward e-mail to another e-mail account.
If your ISP, school, or workplace provides an e-mail account that you
like to use then a heurtley.com forwarding account can be created to
forward e-mail sent to name@heurtley.com to your actual account.
Forwarding e-mail accounts are not "real" e-mail accounts and
instructions to access the actual e-mail account must come from
whoever provides the service.
Real e-mail accounts
"Real" e-mail accounts physically reside on Flounder's hard disk.
These accounts are independent of the means by which you connect to
the internet. For example, many people have modem dial-up internet
access with an ISP and an e-mail account that comes as part of the
service. A real heurtley.com e-mail account is completely independent of
the ISP and the e-mail account provided by the ISP. You can have a real
heurtley.com e-mail account without having ISP service at all and
access your e-mail on computers in a school, library, or at an
internet cafe. Often the e-mail service provided by ISPs is erratic
and unreliable and you may want to use a heurtley.com e-mail account
instead of an ISP's e-mail account.
There are two ways to access a real heurtley.com e-mail account:
SquirrelMail
The easiest way is to bring up a web browser and enter the URL:
http://flounder.jimking.net/webmail/src/login.php
which is the entry point to a web-based e-mail access program called
SquirrelMail. SquirrelMail will ask you for your username and password
and then display a list of your incoming e-mail messages. SquirrelMail
is very powerful and a convenient way of accessing your e-mail when
traveling.
The www.heurtley.com web site has a convenient link like this:
Log-in here
that will take you to the SquirrelMail log-in screen without having
to type in the URL.
E-mail client programs
The second way to access your heurtley.com e-mail is to configure an
e-mail client program like OutLook Express or Netscape Messenger. To
do this you need three pieces of information:
The name of the incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) e-mail servers.
In this case the incoming and outgoing servers are the same computer
which is called flounder.jimking.net.
Your username.
Your password.
Outgoing e-mail authentication
Unlike most ISP e-mail servers the heurtley.com e-mail server
requires a username and password before it will send
e-mail. This is to prevent spammers from using flounder.jimking.net as
an e-mail relay. The procedure for setting up a heurtley.com e-mail
account is often exactly the same as setting up an ISP e-mail account
except that you have to configure the e-mail client program to send
your username and password to send e-mail.
