Around 1960 my late Uncle Fred
Berkeley built a stereo system that included four Marantz
Model 2 power amplifiers. Three still exist and two are
currently operational.
The two surviving tube cages are
labeled "LO-L" and "HI-R" which makes me think that all four
were used in a single room. The amps have serial
numbers 2-4175, 2-4331,
and 5535. Amp 5535 is marked "all 3/23/61" which may be when the
tubes were last replaced.
The amplifier puts out 40 watts to a loudspeaker in
ultra-linear mode and draws 200 watts of power when it's running.
My father John Heurtley was given the amps after Uncle Fred died. They remained in storage for many years until recently when my father gave them to me. Here of some pictures of the set-up I made to test them. The audio source is my Toshiba Libretto U100 notebook computer playing an audio CD. |
