The Log Cabin

My log cabin is on a slab that is 18 feet square. The walls (logs, insulation, and pine paneling) are about a foot thick making the interior about 16 feet square. Electricity comes from an array of eight 25 watt solar panels giving about 200 watts total in bright sunlight. The solar panels charge three 12 volt 85 amp-hour gell-cell batteries. A 1000 watt gas generator provides supplementary power during the cloudy months of November and April. The batteries power:

The slab is poured around a drilled well that is 300 feet deep. The water level is 12 feet deep. The well pump is 50 feet deep. The water is full of iron so I treat it with ozone to oxidize and precipitate the iron into rust so it can be filtered out.

Two small propane on-demand water heaters make hot water for the sink and the shower.

The cabin is heated with a soapstone wood stove. I burn one to two cords of wood a winter depending on how cold it is.
